The British Embassy, Kuwait has a vacancy for the post of Locally Engaged Political Officer.
Purpose of the job:
To research, report and advise on local political issues – including Islamic Affairs – to ensure that the Ambassador, colleagues within the Embassy, the wider FCO and regional posts have a good understanding of Kuwait’s political situation. 
To build contacts and undertake preliminary research and analysis of a range of external, thematic and economic issues supported by the joint heads of the political and economic team.  To assist in preparing for inward visits of UK government officials, public figures and Ministers.
Political work in support of all key post objectives.
Political research directly supports work to promote:
• Stability – through encouraging Kuwaiti policies which undermine extremism and reduce the threat to UK interests and to the UK mainland, and through Kuwait and GCC policies which support regional stability
• Support the British Economy – by improving conditions and access in Kuwait for British business, particularly in financial services and the oil sector.  And by encouraging Kuwait to become a more open, diverse and secure economy, while remaining a major investor in, and secure energy supplier to, the UK.
Duties and responsibilities:
• Developing relevant Political contacts such as MPs, researchers, think tanks etc., to assist in political research. Maintaining a good knowledge of political events and developments (eg, monitoring the press and blogs; attending Diwaniyas, and meeting political contacts, think tanks and academics regularly).  Advise Ambassador and political team on key contacts - recommend and set up meetings and calls.  Jobholder also assists in arranging programmes for visitors to the Embassy, including VIPs and Trade Missions.
• Conducting research in support of the Embassy’s Political and Economics Section:  Desk-based research, as well as research conducted through contacts and academic sources; analysing Kuwaiti political trends and developments; contributing to oral and written briefing in support of Political Section, including the Ambassador and Deputy Head of Mission, and/or colleagues in the UK or other posts as requested. Research and internal reporting on external, thematic and economic issues supported by joint heads of team.  Areas of policy responsibility include Islamic Affairs, Kuwait’s internal politics and other topics as necessary. Finally leading on Embassy Prosperity initiatives.
• Representative work: attending functions, receptions and other external events, sometimes as the Embassy’s only representative, reporting back to colleagues as necessary.  Accompanying political team members to external meetings and producing records of the meetings. Attending key events within the Embassy: welcoming VIPs, and making use of local knowledge to introduce Embassy colleagues to senior figures.
• General administration of Political and Economics Section – including knowledge management and leading on keeping database of Political contacts up to date; Supervision of the Embassy Maintenance Team
• Self management and self development
• Good written and spoken communication skills in English and Arabic.  
• Extensive knowledge of Kuwait Government and political system, culture and society.  
• Good general IT skills: use of word processing, email and calendar management (eg, knowledge of Microsoft Office programmes such as Word, Excel and Outlook).  Internet-based research skills. 
• Strong networking skills and interpersonal skills, including the ability to build relationships with key contacts over a short space of time.  
• Report writing skills.  
• Customer focus and communication skills.  
• Organisational, analytical and time management skills, with very good attention to detail
• Programme management and budgeting skills.

The Embassy offers an attractive working environment and remuneration package for the role, including salary of KD 687 per month inclusive of all allowances. The successful candidate will be expected to start work as soon as possible.
Normal working hours are 07:30 – 15:30 Sunday to Wednesday and 07:30 - 13:30 on Thursday.
Eligibility:
If you are selected for this position, we will be able to employ you as along as you:
• Are legally resident in Kuwait;
• Complete local security checks.
