Applications are invited to fill a vacancy within the British Embassy, Bahrain as Head of UK
Trade & Investment (UKTI).
Working with the Ambassador and Deputy Ambassador, and managing a team of three, the
successful candidate will be responsible for strengthening the trade and investment
relationship between the UK and Bahrain, in particular helping position UK companies to
capitalise on major commercial opportunities in Bahrain. You will play a key role in
delivering our prosperity objectives by delivering UKTI trade targets, supporting UK business
in Bahrain, developing relationships with key local contacts and working with British
Government colleagues (including but not limited to UKTI Defence and Security
Organisation, Foreign and Commonwealth Office, Ministry of Defence and Home Office) to
deliver focussed British Government support.

The British Embassy in Bahrain is part of a world-wide network of 230 Posts, representing
British political, economic, trade and consular interests overseas.

Main duties and responsibilities of the job holder include:
Strategic Planning:
Lead and manage trade and investment activities of the British Embassy in Bahrain including:
- Working closely with the Deputy Ambassador and Ambassador and reporting regularly to head quarters to monitor development of strategic business opportunities. Also working with Partners Across Government including UKTI Defence and Security Organisation, Ministry of Defence, Foreign and CommonwealthOffice, Home Office.
- Build and maintain a wide network of high level contacts in the British business community working closely with the Bahrain British Business Forum, key merchant families, ministries, trade-related bodies and attending relevant events.
- To oversee a comprehensive and varied UKTI calendar of events to ensure delivery of a challenging set of targets. Setting priorities for the UKTI team and leading on strategic campaigns.
- Work with Prosperity and Communications teams on prosperity agenda and Commercial Diplomacy.
- Oversee high level/VIP commercial visits including briefing, logistics and programme arrangements. Meet and brief visiting UK businesses and lobbying on their behalf.
Managing a budget:
- Working with the Deputy Head of UKTI and other team members, you will be responsible for managing and signing off a ring fenced budget on a monthly basis.
- Ensure each month’s forecast is delivered in detail and on time.
Line Management:
- Efficiently manage a team of three with line manager responsibilities for one. Lead from the front on new and existing policies, encourage and deliver a culture of excellence to deliver against deadlines and challenging targets.
Other:
- Communicating and working with regional colleagues to deliver strategy, share ideas, information and best practice.
- Attend events and meetings out of hours where necessary to promote the UKTI and British Embassy ‘brand’ particularly in this bicentenary year.
- Work with embassy staff to deliver embassy led initiatives, events and activities.
- Any other trade related work/activities not covered by the above.
Qualifications, Experience and Skills
- 1-2 years of work experience in a related field is preferred
- Excellent written and spoken English
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work on own initiative
- Strong customer focus and ability to deliver quality service
- Small team leadership and management experience
- Collaborative approach to colleague and stakeholder partnerships
- Strong IT skills; proficient in MS Office applications
- Fluency in spoken Arabic is an advantage but not essential
- Experience of managing a budget.
