UK Trade & Investment (UKTI) is the government agency responsible for championing international business, helping UK based businesses succeed globally and helping international businesses invest in the UK.
UKTI China is in the final stages of transforming its organisational structure and culture to focus on strategic high value trade and investment opportunities in five priority sectors, one of which is Consumer, Creative and Education (CCE).
This position is in the UKTI Education team responsible for helping UK education and training organisations win more business in China and secure new and increased investment from China to the UK within the education and skills sectors to meet a set of challenging targets. International and dual curriculum schools is one of four strategic priority focus for the team, the others being education training qualification, education technology, and higher education reform.
There is a strong demand for more high quality international and dual curriculum schools in China and a UKTI-commissioned Parthenon report has identified opportunities worth £200m+ to 2020. We are looking for an exceptional candidate to take responsibility for leading, developing, and delivering an ambitious and challenging programme of activities designed to deliver international and dual curriculum schools opportunities to UK businesses.
Reporting to the UKTI Head of Education and Skills, the jobholder will lead on developing and delivering targeted campaigns and activities designed to help UK organisations access and pursue projects in this subsector, ensuring that agreed targets are met. This will involve working closely with UKTI Education HQ team and key internal and external partners and stakeholders, including the British Council (BC) and the China Britain Business Council (CBBC), UKTI’s outsourced delivery partner in China for on-demand services for British companies.

The jobholder will have the following roles and responsibilities:
Delivering strategic trade and investment campaigns
  • Achieve challenging commercial outcomes by working with the Head of Education & Skills, UKTI Education HQ team, BC, CBBC to design and delver trade and investment campaigns for the international and dual curriculum schools subsector.
  • Implement the Parthenon report by developing a clear set of principles to identify internationals schools opportunities for the UK, including establishing relationships with businesses and government decision makers.
  • Work closely with sector colleagues and others across the Embassy/ Consulates to draw on their knowledge and contacts to identify international schools project opportunities through engagement with Chinese business involved in or have an interest in the education sector.
  • Build and maintain a pipeline of active projects in close collaboration with UKTI Education HQ team and have a good understanding of key industry trends.
  • Lead and project manage campaigns and provide strategic input to CBBC and other partners in designing events to raise awareness of international and dual curriculum schools opportunities.
  • Provide ongoing aftercare support to existing UK exporters/ investors in China and existing investors in the UK looking at opportunities to grow their business.

Effective management of your team to deliver
  • Manage the team in delivering against the agreed international and dual curriculum schools campaign plans, and work with key stakeholders to maintain a robust China pipeline of active projects and have a detailed overview of key industry trends and key players.
  • Ensure your team understand and champion capability of UK education sector organisations, as well as investment and collaboration opportunities.

Effective relationship management
  • Play a leading role in identifying and building relationships with senior leaders in key companies and organisations in China and the UK, including intermediaries and trade associations to understand their business intentions and needs.
  • Proactively build and maintain key relationships with the Chinese Ministry of Education, local government, and other public organisations to support delivery of project opportunities and to address business environment and market access issues.
  • Maintain a close working relationship with CBBC and support them to achieve their targets for service deliveries, revenue and business opportunity responses.

High impact VIP visit and events
  • Play a leading role in planning, managing, and following up on high level visits and event that contribute to sector targets and address business environment and market access issues. 
  • Act as a lead for the development of important visit programmes (by Chinese companies to the UK and UK companies to China) that contribute to your sector targets, working with CBBC and other networks where appropriate.
  • Education: Graduate degree or equivalent professional experience/ qualification.
  • A well developed background of working within the education and training sector in the UK and/or China. In particular, commercial awareness and understanding, including demonstrable understanding of commercial education models and of working with commercial education providers to develop international business opportunities.
  • Strong international business development/ sales and marketing background. 
  • Excellent networking skills. Experienced in relationship managing key clients, able to manage projects and staff remotely.
  • An adaptable self-starter with enthusiasm and energy able to work alone as well as in a team.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Fluent in English and Mandarin.
  • Proven organisational ability.
  • IT: Knowledge of internet research and Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) are necessary.
  • Experience and knowledge of setting up or advising or working with international or dual curriculum schools would be a distinct advantage.
  • Knowledge of CRM would be an advantage but training will be provided.

We also offer excellent development opportunities and a 22-day annual leave entitlement in pro rata. Conditioned working hours is 35 hours/ week from Monday to Friday and flexible working can be arranged upon personal needs. Staff recruited locally by the Consulate-General is subject to Terms and Conditions of Service according to local Chinese employment law.
The jobholder will be required to travel regularly within and occasionally outside Mainland China. Some work (including travel) will be required during the evenings and occasionally weekends, for which time off in lieu or overtime (where applicable) will be given.

Successful candidate will be required to start as soon as possible.
